Common questions

What must appear on a NZ tax invoice?

Every NZ tax invoice must include: the words 'Tax Invoice', your name and GST number, the date issued, a description of goods or services, and the GST amount or a statement that GST is included. Invoices over $1,000 (GST inclusive) must also include the buyer's name and address and a unique invoice number.

Do I need a GST number on my invoice?

Only if you are GST registered with IRD. You must register for GST once your taxable supplies exceed $60,000 in any 12-month period. If you are not GST registered, you issue regular invoices without GST — do not add a GST number or charge GST.

What is the difference between a tax invoice and a regular invoice in NZ?

A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered business and includes GST details (your GST number, GST amount). A regular invoice is issued by non-registered businesses and does not include GST. Your clients can only claim GST input credits if they hold a valid tax invoice from you.
